School Introduction

Washington Academy of Languages is the school for students who want to learn English quickly. Classes feature a communicative approach. About 100-125 Americans study other languages at the Academy each term so it is a great place to meet people who are interested in language exchange. We have an active Conversation Partner program. Volunteer placement and activities are also available for enrolled students. The Academy is located in the heart of downtown Seattle. We are in the tourist section of the city near shops, restaurants, the beautiful waterfront, famous Pike Place Market, Safeco Field for baseball as well as the Seahawks football and Sonics basketball stadiums. The Seattle Art Museum and new performance centers are nearby. Many sightseeing and recreational opportunities are near and Canada is 3 hours by car from Seattle and is an easy weekend destination. The Academy also offers a graduate Certificate in Teaching ESL in cooperation with Seattle Pacific University, English Study/Tour programs, special part-time courses and Custom Programs for people who want private, individualized classes.

ESL Program Introduction

The group Intensive English Program at the Academy begins every 5 weeks. It features seven levels. Students can learn English for academic purposes or for improved communication. Classes meet 4 hours daily, Monday through Friday. At the advanced level, there are two study programs: College Preparation helps people prepare to enter a college or university and to do well on the TOEFL; Advanced Communications offers 4 hours daily of speaking and listening practice, vocabulary development, public speaking opportunities and interviewing techniques. There are also special morning classes available including Business English, Pronunciation & Speaking, TOEFL Preparation and TOEIC Preparation. All classrooms have computers and free internet or e-mail connections. There is also a modern audio lab. Faculty have advanced degrees and training in teaching English to non-native speakers.
