School Introduction

Founded in 1955, UFELI prepares international students for study at American universities and trains others needing to improve general English. Students are placed in Grammar, Listening/Speaking, and Reading/Writing classes upon arrival. UFELI provides intensive instruction by highly qualified faculty and gives students ample opportunity to participate in our Cultural Immersion Program. The CIP offers weekend trips, sports, coffee talk, picnics, conversation partners, movies and volunteering positions in the community. Gainesville is a beautiful urban forest located in north-central Florida. UFELI is a two hour drive from Orlando, Tampa and Jacksonville. This offers opportunities for one-day excursions and weekend trips to Disney World, Busch Gardens and world famous beaches.

ESL Program Introduction

Students at UFELI are placed into appropriate skill and age levels with an entrance exam. All full time students are registered for Grammar, Listening/Speaking, Reading/Writing and can enroll in electives like TOEFL iBT, Business English, Literature, Pronunciation and Vocabulary classes. Listening and Speaking classes are divided between faculty members and Language Assistants. These LAs are undergraduate UF students who assist ELI students with popular culture, slang, music and general English. All full-time students can take an institutional TOEFL at the end of each semester. This TOEFL may be accepted at certain departments at the University of Florida.
