Christ's Hospital was the result of the vision of Edward VI, assisted by Nicholas Ridley, Bishop of London, and Sir Richard Dobbs, Lord Mayor of the City. Its genesis was the earlier dissolution of the monasteries and the resultant overflow onto the streets of the poor and destitute. Encouraged by a sermon from Ridley, exhorting mercy to the poor, the King wrote to the Lord Mayor encouraging him to action. This he did via a committee of 30 merchants. Over the centuries Christís Hospital has continued to enjoy Royal patronage. His Royal Highness the Duke of Cambridge started a tradition of Royal Presidents in 1854. In 1919 His Majesty George V became our first Royal Patron, followed by His Majesty George VI in 1937 and Her Majesty the Queen in 1953. The move to the 1200 acres at Christís Hospital was greeted with much consternation among Christís Hospital Governors, being at the behest of a Government commission. His Royal Highness the Duke of Cambridge was moved to say "I am one of those who are perfectly prepared to go with the spirit of the age in which we live, but I confess that I am also one of those who do not love change for changeís sake. To upset an old and long standing institutionÖ is a very dangerous experiment to try."
ESL Program Introduction
David Lloyd Summer Camps are tailored for young athletes to come and vastly improve their Tennis game and for foreign students to learn or improve their English language skills. Work hard, make new friends and have a lot of fun. We aim to give students the chance to be coached by high professionals, improve their technique, and be challenged by some of the best players in their peer group. We divide the groups from the complete beginner to professional. Beginners, tournament players and top ranked juniors from all over the world come to our "Harry Potter" school and beautiful 15 court facility to participate in our intense program and possibility to win themselves our prestigious "young player" management contract and full- time place in our Academy. Our camps combine technical instruction and drilling from our highly professional full-time coaching staff, fitness training, supervised match play, and a variety of evening social activities. We are the only Summer Camp in the world who do not charge any extra for our English Language Course. English Language Classes are run every day, two sessions a day and these sessions are 2 hours in length. So you have the opportunity to have four hours of English classes per day. On the day of arrival you will be assessed by our English teachers who will put you in a group suitable for you.
