School Introduction

The University of Minnesota is a major teaching and research university located in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota—the Twin Cities.The University has been offering English as a Second Language courses and programs since 1968. Since then, we have helped thousands of students from across the globe achieve academic success, advance their careers, and develop international networks of friends.

ESL Program Introduction

The Intensive English Program is for students who want to improve their English skills or TOEFL scores and it can serve as a gateway into other University programs. Students choose from two 15-week sessions during the school year: September through mid-December, January through early May; or a 7-week session in
the summer from July through mid-August. There are four levels of English study for 20-25 hours of classes a week. Classes include grammar, reading and composition,
listening and speaking.

Academic English Program

Courses are offered for academic credit and are designed to meet the needs of undergraduates, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and University employees who want to upgrade their English to be more effective in their study, research, or work. Visit the Web site at for more details.
