ESL Program Introduction

At Otterbein, we supplement your classroom learning with thoughtfully crafted excursions, fieldtrips and activities which put you in contact with members of the community. Here you have the opportunity to befriend an American family, to participate in abundant cultural and historical activities, and to be integrated into campus housing and life while building long-lasting relationships with American students.

The Intensive English Program (IEP) at Otterbein University uses an integrated approach to language learning. Rather than teach skills in isolation, a holistic approach is taken. Otterbein’s IEP program combines the language skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing while developing academic skills in research and note taking when focusing on a variety of relevant and interesting topics. Using a content-based curriculum, students are engaged in activities that require the use of a variety of skills and strategies that encourage authentic communication. This creates a dynamic, student-centered learning environment in which students acquire language in a natural and meaningful way.
