ESL Course Level Descriptions

Please note that any level can be taken either as a Short Course (also called part time course), or as part of one of our Intensive Programs of 18 hours per week or more. Be sure to take our online test to see what course level would be right for you! The textbooks and audio CDs for the first five levels are our own NYLC textbooks from the "New Beginnings" series.

LEVEL IA - BASIC: For those with no prior exposure to English. Students begin with the alphabet and numbers. Basic sentences and phrases related to everyday "survival" situations are also covered.

LEVEL IB: An introduction to basic vocabulary and grammar. Students learn how to ask and answer questions used in everyday situations. The course includes some writing of basic sentences, phrases, and expressions.

LEVEL II: (Prerequisite-Level I or Entrance Exam) This course reinforces the fundamental grammar and vocabulary needed for basic communication. Emphasis is on spoken English, but reading and writing are also included. Level II covers all the basic verb tenses.

LEVEL III: (Prerequisite-Level II or Entrance Exam) For students who have completed the basic levels and have some communicative proficiency. Oral competency is highly emphasized. Instruction will include more complex grammar and idiomatic expressions.

LEVEL IV: (Prerequisite-Level III or Entrance Exam) This level continues to develop oral proficiency and introduces other language functions not previously studied. Greater emphasis is placed on writing and listening in this course than in Levels I-III.

LEVEL V: (Prerequisite-Level IV or Entrance Exam) For students who can freely communicate with minimal hesitation, but have yet to gain true fluency. Emphasis is placed on idiomatic expressions and vocabulary development. Development of writing and reading skills continues from that learned in Level IV.

ADVANCED SERIES 100, 200, 300: These are the school's advanced level series. Students will gain fluency and improve listening comprehension, reading, and grammar skills. In addition, vocabulary and idioms are emphasized. There are more than twenty courses in the advanced series and they may be taken in any order.

ADVANCED GRAMMAR, ADVANCED WRITING, BUSINESS ENGLISH, TOEFL PREPARATION: These are the school's most advanced courses for students preparing for university admission through the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or for those who simply want to focus on improving their English grammar, writing, and vocabulary skills at the highest level. Business English, Grammar, and Writing are offered on a rotating basis at our Jackson Heights (Queens) school and our Manhattan schools. TOEFL preparation and Pronunciation courses are offered every session at the Midtown Manhattan school.
