ESL Program Introduction

The American Language and Culture Institute (ALCI) offers intensive English language programs for international students who want to improve their English language skills before entering colleges and universities in the United States. Intensive Academic Program (IAP) provides strong writing, reading, speaking and research skills. In addition, the program offers an introduction to the American cultural experience which is necessary to succeed in U.S. universities and colleges.

Students in IAP can use the computer and language labs, the library media resource center, e-mail accounts, and sports facilities. TOEFL preparation is included. Satisfactory completion of ALCI provides TOEFL equivalency for undergraduate and graduate admission to CSU San Marcos.

Conditional admission is available to qualified students applying for undergraduate and graduate programs. Summer Bridge course, for students with a TOEFL score of 550 (paper) or 213 (CBT) who will begin university degree programs during the fall semester, provides a unique opportunity to learn and practice the academic and cultural skills that help students succeed in American universities.

The ALCI also offers Semester Abroad programs for international university students. Semester Abroad students who have a high level of English may enroll in university classes for credit.

Customized short-term programs for groups provide English language study and activities. Language learning emphasizes active communication (speaking and listening). Programs include on-and off-campus activities as well as field trips to the beach and other local attractions.
